Violence erupted in Karamoja recently when Turkana herdsmen raided the Jie people's grazing lands, stealing 255 cattle and tragically killing two young shepherds. This act defied Executive Order No. 3, implemented in May 2023 to promote peace in the region.

Thankfully, a swift response from joint security forces led to the recovery of 195 head of cattle. In a ceremony held at the Kobebe Mega Valley dam in Moroto district, the recovered animals were returned to their rightful Jie owners.

Mr. Tuko Justin, Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Moroto, emphasized the importance of returning stolen property. "This is a crucial step," he said, "as we await further actions to ensure lasting peace."

Hon. Peter Abraham Lokii, representing Jie County in Kotido district's parliament, applauded the security forces' role in rebuilding trust within the community. He stressed that recovering stolen property fosters peace by deterring revenge attacks.

Representing the UPDF's 3rd Division Commander, Col. Richard Obura Kidega reaffirmed the military's commitment to disarmament operations. These efforts aim to recover more stolen livestock and uphold the Executive Order, ultimately bringing stability to Karamoja.

Elders Logwang Adokamoru and Longoole Nabokolem, residents of Nakapelimoru Sub County in Kotido, expressed their gratitude upon receiving their cattle. They commended both local leaders and the security forces for their swift intervention, offering a glimmer of hope for a peaceful future.

The ceremony was witnessed by several dignitaries, including local government officials and military commanders. This event symbolizes a positive step towards restoring peace in Karamoja by addressing the root causes of conflict and returning stolen property to its rightful owners
